Justice Sector Reform

Access to a fair and effective justice system is essential for shared prosperity, an inclusive economy and social development. The purpose of the Justice Sector is to protect rights and freedoms under the law, check abuse of power and resolve conflicts. In fragile and post-conflict countries, populations may have little or no recourse to formal justice institutions. RAI aims to support justice systems to enhance their independence, impartiality, accountability, accessibility and efficiency, and increase compliance with international human rights standards.

Training and
Mentorship

Legal reform and the training of justice providers contribute to increasing the efficiency of the justice sector. Court officers who receive technical skills training reduce the time taken to process cases, thus reducing case backlog. Providing mentorship ensures that trained skills are refined. Furthermore, mentors are able to impart expert knowledge gained from many years of experience. In addition to technical skills improvement, the development and introduction to modernized and computerized procedures and tools also attribute to the enhancement of the justice sector.

Employing justice measures in post-conflict societies can create an environment conducive to reconciliation and, in turn, support long lasting peace. A key part of the state-building process includes the establishment of credible and legitimate justice delivery institutions.
